Turner Opts For AWS As Its Preferred Cloud Provider

Epic win! Turner, the entertainment, sports, and news arm of Time Warner, has announced that it has selected AWS as its cloud platform of choice. Furthermore, it will bring decades of content to AWS.

Including a 15 petabyte CNN video archive!

Turner brands and partners includes names like Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, CNN, TBS, and TNT.

The company made this big news official at the annual re:Invent conference in Las Vegas, and just like Amazon Web Services winning the business of GE recently, this is about as big as it gets in the highly competitive world of cloud technology these days.

Getting back to Turner, though, the company is all set to move thousands of virtual machines to the Amazon cloud platform. It also plans to use a wide range of AI technologies that the cloud leader offers to better analyze video metadata, and offer its viewers enhanced personalized experiences.

Of course, artificial intelligence will also help Turner advertisers, content creators, and analysts better understand viewing trends.

Turner CTO Jeremy Legg:

“We’re changing our broadcast technology stack to a fully digital, cloud environment built on AWS, which will enable us to adapt to new video delivery models, as well as provide our viewers with more personalized content and advertisement. Our relationship with AWS and the services they provide are essential to our success. Given that we reach over 80 percent of adults and 70 percent of millennials every month, we needed a cloud provider that has the ability to support massive-scale media businesses like ours which often have spikes in demand across our diverse portfolio.”

Good stuff, this.

Obviously, Turner is not the first media company to make the move to the AWS cloud, as Amazon already hosts a whole array of providers on its platform — names like ABC, BBC, C-SPAN, GoPro, Hulu, Lionsgate, Netflix, PBS, and Spotify already have a presence on Amazon Web Services.
