AWS Now Authorized For Sensitive US Department Of Defense Data

Amazon has become the third company with this prestigious clearance, as AWS achieved the Department of Defense Impact Level 5 Provisional Authorization.

Which is to say that the cloud provider can host the most sensitive of data, including top secret Pentagon and NSA information. It became the third company to achieve this distinction.

Following Microsoft and IBM.

The US DoD granted provisional authorization to Amazon Web Services to host this type of data, and the cloud computing arm of the company will now have clearance for both military and security agencies.

As Amazon wrote in a recent blog post:

“This further bolsters AWS as an industry leader in helping support the DoD’s critical mission in protecting our security. The AWS services support a variety of DoD workloads, including workloads containing sensitive controlled unclassified information (CUI) and National Security Systems (NSS) information.”

DoD is the department of the US executive branch that oversees national security agencies, and the armed forces. It already hosts data on the AWS platform.

In fact, Amazon Web Services is the favored cloud provider among the intelligence landscape, as the company hosts classified data for 17 agencies — the most high-profile of which is its $600 million contract with the CIA.

This latest development simply goes to show that the cloud giant can now handle larger scale sensitive workloads that meet the stringent CC SRG IL5 requirements of the Department of Defense.
